Once you land at Falcone-Borsellino Airport, you’re so close to your adventure in Palermo, all you have to do is get there!
One of the best ways to get from the airport into the city is to take a Prestia e Comande Bus. This bus departs from the arrivals area of the airport every half hour starting at 5am. The bus makes stops along the route at stations like Piazza Castelnuovo and Stazione Centrale. To see all of the stops the bus makes, check out the “Aeroporto Falcone Borsellino – Palermo” map on their website here. If you’re not familiar with Italian, select english in the drop down menu at the top right of the page.
The cost for an adult ticket is €6.00 online or €6.30 in person, and the trip to Stazione Centrale is approximately 50 minutes. You can buy tickets for the bus online here, in the station, or on board the bus. You can also download the app ahead of time and buy tickets from there. There’s ample room on the bus for luggage but, unfortunately it’s not wheelchair accessible.
If you prefer a more direct route to your accomodations, a taxi might be an option to consider. You can catch a taxi outside the arrivals area and it takes about 45 minutes to get downtown from there. The cost when the meter is switched on is around €50.00. If you’re feeling friendly, you can try to find someone who’s headed in the same direction and split the fare with them. There’s no ride shares in the city but this is one way of DIY-ing a rideshare to get you where you’re going for a cheaper cost. If you chose to take a taxi, be sure to agree on a fare with your driver before you even get in the car. There’s a high chance that you’ll get ripped off if you don’t do this, so make sure you start your trip off with an experience that leaves you feeling great instead of uncomfortable. Even if you’re super careful, it’s best to avoid this option unless absolutely necessary. There’s a lot of stories of tourists being charged €100 to get to their destination, through no fault of their own.
Rent a Car
If you plan on exploring outside the city and want the freedom to travel on your own terms, a rental car may be the best option for you. You can rent a car from the lower level of the airport from all of the major rental car companies. If you plan on renting a car, be warned that driving in the city can become chaotic pretty quickly. If you’re up to the challenge, go for it!
To recap, the most efficient and cheapest way to get to the city is by Prestia e Comande Bus. A taxi is a good option to get you right to your destination, as long as you take precautions to avoid being overcharged. A great option if you plan to head out of the city and into the rest of Italy, a rental car can give you a lot of freedom. Whichever way you chose to get in to the city, have a safe ride and a great trip!
