After travelling through those flights and layovers, you’ve made it to the legislative capital of South Africa! But now what? Have no fear – Cape Town International Airport lies just 20km away from the main city centre and luckily, there are several accessible options to get there.
Public Transportation – Bus
Starting with the most affordable option, as you leave the main terminal, you can take a bus from the airport to the Civic Centre via Cape Town’s My CiTi bus system, and then connect to other bus routes to reach your destination. Plan your route with myciti.org.za/en/routes/route-map-downloads/
Note that in order to get a ride on the buses, you will need a myconnect card which is available for purchase at the airport and other MyCiTi bus stations. Fares to the city are between 60-100 ZAR ($4-7 USD) depending on the time you ride. For updated fares visit the MyCiti fares calculator.
Keep in mind that My CiTi buses run daily between 5:30am-9:30pm, so plan your trip accordingly.
Metered taxis are a more convenient option, especially if you’ll be travelling with considerable luggage or travelling in a group and want to split the cost of transportation. When you step out of the airport terminal, follow the signs for the taxi queue. Some offer a flat rate to the city centre while others will charge by the kilometer, but a taxi ride from the airport to the city centre should cost approximately 300-400 ZAR ($20-30 USD).
If you’re planning on staying in Cape Town for a longer period of time, consider renting a car before you arrive at the airport. Not only does it make it easier to get around, but you’ll save money avoiding the cost of transfers and taxis.
To recap, your most cost-effective option would be to take advantage of Cape Town’s MyCiti bus transportation, but if you want to opt for a more convenient way of getting to the city and are staying for a short period of time, you may want to go with a taxi, but be prepared to pay a little more. And lastly, renting a car may be a good idea especially if your trip will span several days. In all cases, safe travels as you explore one of the most beautiful cities in the world!
