Aarhus Beyond the Guidebook: Personal Journeys with Lokafyer Makhin

When you think of travel, it’s often the stories, the people, and the unexpected moments that stay with you long after the trip ends. That’s exactly what Lokafyer Makhin offers in Aarhus—a deeply personal, authentic, and local experience that goes beyond the usual sightseeing checklist. Originally from Tajikistan and shaped by a life of travel across continents, Makhin brings warmth, connection, and a storyteller’s spark to every tour she leads. Whether you're wandering through hidden courtyards or tasting Danish chocolate for the first time, her goal is simple: to help you connect with the soul of the city—and feel like you're exploring Aarhus with a friend.

About You

Tell us a bit about yourself. What inspired you to become a Lokafyer?
Hi! My name is Makhin. I originally come from a small mountainous country in Central Asia, Tajikistan. It’s one of those places that people usually pause and ask, “Wait, where exactly is that?” But my story doesn’t end or begin there. I’ve spent most of my life outside of my home country. I’ve journeyed across three continents, living, studying, and working in places as varied as the bustling streets of Hong Kong, the tropical warmth of Malaysia, the vibrant cultures of Turkey and Bulgaria, the diverse landscapes of the USA, and the historic charm of Germany, Sweden, and Vietnam. Each country added its own chapter to my story and shaped how I see the world today.

Today, I call Aarhus home. It’s Denmark’s “City of Smiles” and quite frankly, it lives up to that name. I live here with my international family, and every day I fall more in love with this place. When I first arrived, I was captivated by the contrast of ancient and modern—how a city that began as a fortified Viking settlement called Aros in the 8th century evolved into a vibrant, forward-thinking cultural capital of Europe.

One day, I stumbled across a Facebook post from Lokafy looking for local guides in Aarhus. I had one of those “Why not?” moments. I saw it not just as an opportunity to guide people, but to share stories—mine, Aarhus’s, and those that we create together during our walks. It’s not just guiding; it’s connecting, exchanging cultures, and seeing the city through fresh eyes each time.

What do you love most about the city you guide in?
What I truly love about Aarhus is its beautiful blend of history and hidden surprises—like a secret treasure chest waiting to be discovered. Sure, the Viking roots and iconic landmarks are captivating, but what excites me most is showing visitors the hidden gems, the cozy cafés tucked away on quiet streets, colorful street art corners, peaceful parks where locals unwind, and little-known spots you won’t find in any guidebook or online search.

These non-touristy places reveal the true heartbeat of Aarhus, the soul behind the city’s smile. Guiding here means more than sightseeing; it’s about storytelling, sharing the unexpected, and creating authentic experiences that connect people to the city in a personal way.

Can you share a personal story about what led you to live in your current city?

Love brought me to Denmark—quite literally. Life has a way of guiding you to the most unexpected places, and for me, that path led to Jutland. Over the years, I’ve lived in a few different cities across this region, but Aarhus stole my heart the moment I arrived. There’s something special about it—maybe it’s the creative energy, the welcoming atmosphere, or simply the feeling that you belong. And being so close to the German border doesn’t hurt either!

We’ve often jumped spontaneously into the car and in just a few hours, found ourselves at a flower festival in the Netherlands or deep in southern Europe, chasing the sun in beautiful Croatia, a country whose raw nature completely stole my heart last year.

But what truly makes Aarhus my favorite is that it’s not just a place for adventurers, but also for families. As a mother of a lively 7-year-old little Viking, I feel grateful for the incredible international school here—it’s a nurturing space for global-minded kids. And the city itself is bursting with life. No matter the day, you might stumble upon a music festival, a pop-up art event, or some unexpected celebration right in the heart of the city.

I genuinely feel blessed to live in such a forward-thinking, inclusive place. Aarhus Municipality goes above and beyond to make everyone feel welcome. It’s not just a city, it’s a community, a creative playground, and a home.

Your Lokafy Experience

Can you share a memorable experience from one of your tours?
One of my most memorable experiences happened recently during a walking tour with a lovely family from the USA. It just so happened to fall on a public holiday in Denmark, one of those days when everything is closed. I could see a bit of disappointment in their eyes, so I decided to surprise them with a little welcome gift to brighten the day.

Before the tour, I prepared a small set of souvenirs: Denmark’s famous chocolate, a handmade 3D magnet of Aarhus, some beautiful postcards—and luckily, nature gifted us with plenty of sunshine too! Even though we couldn’t step inside the usual attractions, we had an incredible time walking through the sunny streets, exchanging stories, and talking heart to heart.

It reminded me that guiding isn’t just about landmarks and facts. It’s about connection, warmth, and making people feel at home, even when far from it.

What do you think makes a tour truly exceptional?
For me, an exceptional tour is all about creativity, authenticity, dynamics, and honesty. I always welcome my guests with a small souvenir—my way of saying, “You’re not just a tourist, you’re my guest.”

I avoid textbook facts and instead focus on real-life stories, cultural quirks, and personal reflections. I always check in on how my guests are feeling so they can set the pace. And I never try to play the role of a polished, professional guide—I just show up as myself. That’s where the magic happens.

What’s your favorite part of being a Lokafyer?

Makhin-6

Without a doubt, it’s the people. Every tour brings a new connection, new laughter, new memories. I love seeing someone’s eyes light up when they discover a hidden courtyard or hear a quirky story that brings the city to life.

Some of my guests still stay in touch, and that, to me, is the most rewarding part.

What’s something surprising you’ve learned from travelers?
Every tour teaches me something new. Travelers often notice small, beautiful details I’ve stopped paying attention to—like how the light hits a brick wall at sunset or how quiet the city sounds compared to their hometown. Others have shared incredibly personal stories of why they travel, including using travel as a way to heal. It’s taught me that these tours aren’t just sightseeing—they can be moments of reflection and transformation too.

Have you faced any challenges while guiding?
Thankfully, no major ones—but I’ve had guests from cruise ships arrive late due to docking delays. In those cases, I extended the tour time at no extra cost. It completely changed their mood, and they were so grateful. Also, it’s Denmark—so weather can be tricky! I always carry extra umbrellas just in case. Sometimes, the best memories are made in the rain.

What feedback has impacted you the most?
The most meaningful feedback is when travelers say it felt like spending time with a friend, not a guide. Some have asked to stay in touch even though they might never return to Aarhus. That kind of connection—built in just a few hours—reminds me why I love doing this.

Local Insights

What hidden gems do you love sharing with travelers?
I love introducing travelers to the quiet, residential neighborhoods with Viking roots—places filled with winding alleys and timber-framed houses where locals live. The cozy cafés in central Aarhus feel like someone’s living room, and I always include green spaces where locals go to relax.

One of the best hidden spots? A panoramic viewpoint with a 360° view of the entire city. It’s not on any list, but the moment we get there and see that view—it’s magic.

Can you describe your favorite neighborhood and why?

Makhin-5

Definitely Aarhus Ø, the city’s futuristic waterfront district. The architecture is next-level—from the iceberg-shaped residential buildings of Isbjerget to the transparent Dome of Visions, a hub for community and creativity.

Everything here blends sustainability, art, and modern living. There are green roofs, floating buildings, and open public spaces where you can feel how forward-thinking this city really is. It’s inspiring every time.

Any local traditions or events you recommend?
Yes! The Aarhus Festival in August is my favorite—music, art, theater, and food take over the city. There’s also Sankt Hans Aften (Midsummer’s Eve) with bonfires, singing, and storytelling. And if you love markets, check out the Latin Quarter Market for handmade crafts and street food.

These are the moments when you truly feel Aarhus come alive.

Tips & Advice

How do you tailor tours for different types of travelers?
For families, I keep things playful with lots of breaks. For solo travelers, I focus on connection, conversation, and hidden gems. Couples love romantic corners and stories about love and local customs. It’s all about listening, adapting, and making each experience feel personal.

What advice would you give to new Lokafyers?
Be yourself. You don’t have to be a history expert—just be curious and open-hearted. Preparation helps, but the best moments often come from improvising. Small things—a local snack, a good story, a warm smile—can make all the difference. Treat every traveler like a friend.

Any travel tips for visitors?
Yes! Stay curious and open. Some of the best memories come from unexpected moments. Don’t rush—slow down, enjoy that cozy café, or say “hi” to a local. Try a few Danish words, and don’t shy away from a little rain. That’s where the stories are.

Final Thoughts

Makhin-4

In a world where travel can sometimes feel rushed or transactional, Makhin offers something different: real human connection, honest storytelling, and an open-hearted view of Aarhus. Whether you’re traveling solo, exploring with family, or just want to see a different side of Denmark, walking with her feels like discovering a city with a thoughtful friend—one who’s ready to surprise you with local chocolate, quiet beauty, and stories that stay with you long after the tour ends.
