Tell us a bit about yourself. What inspired you to become a Lokafyer?
One day I got a call from a friend in Viareggio, Tuscany, Italy. He is Italian but teaches German lessons and got contacted by Lokafy because you were looking for German-speaking Lokafyers who could do tours in Florence. He laughed a lot because he is absolutely not interested in history or that city. I found it funny but also very interesting for me, so I asked him for the contact details for Lokafy. Some days later, I had an onboarding call with you :-) Vinita, and I liked it a lot.
What do you love most about the city you guide in?
Cologne got destroyed 97% in City Center during world war 2, so in the 1950's it got re-built quick, easy and very grey. What it means to do tours is, to show the little original rests we have and also talk about the traditions, means what Cologne people did and that is the city, the people. The kölsch beer, the perfume and the carnival.
Can you share a personal story about what led you to live in your current city?
Cologne is the big City in the west of germany with over 1 million people. A lot of immigrants and different religions. For example the biggest mosque in Europe we have here in town. So I love the mix of old and new, people who are "originals" native born and also the influence of the other cultures.
Can you share a memorable experience or moment from one of your tours?
Live diaper change, shopping for some 100 euros in every original store, join a Service in a church together…
What do you think makes a tour truly exceptional?
To get a lot of feedback from the guest. That they ask me a lot questions and also tell about their heritage, family, job, religion... so interaction is all, that I also learn something.
How do you prepare for your tours to ensure they are unique and engaging for travelers?
Always asking before, means after i got the contact details, if the time and meeting point is correct. After what are the expectations about the tour and what I show normally. So the guest can decide what they like to see. Be flexible about guest wishes.
What is your favorite part of being a Lokafyer?
I love to talk with people and to show them around, to share my knowledge about the city. And also if the guest have a question that I can't answer, I make my self a note and send the answer after the tour via WhatsApp or iMessage. I love to do that home work, because I also always learn something new.
Have you learned anything surprising or unexpected from the travelers you've guided?
Absolutely from the guests that comes from the US and India.
US: often the guest have a german Heritage in their Family, so the always Looking a bit for familiar feeling what for example their grand parents visit or eat or cook.
India: they are strong in their giving answers and telling their plans. I like it, so I can fullfill best way their wishes.
Can you describe a challenging situation you encountered during a tour and how you handled it?
One time during a tour we crossed the central station and 4 police men stopped us, because we looked very casual and they liked to control what we are doing. Why we walk there together and what is the relation between us both. So i told them the truth and all was fine. Fun fact the guest was a laywer and asked me after if that is normal in Germany. I told him, in the end they only asked questions to us and that yes, that is always allowed for the police.
What feedback from travelers has been the most rewarding or impactful for you?
The biggest compliment for me is always when the guests invite me after the our for a drink or in a restaurant to expand the talk, to know more, share more questions…
What local hidden gems or off-the-beaten-path spots do you love to share with travelers?
The baroque stile church "Maria Himmelfahrt" is a hidden champion. Most tourists miss to visit it and it is so beautiful. Located near the cathedral. Also I always Show the original Eau De Cologne house of Farina, so the american and nadian guests understand, when they say "I use my Cologne" that their perfume really has something to o with our city. Mostly a big AHA effect.
Can you describe your favorite neighborhood and why you love it?
Absolutely the old town. The loud bars and the quiet churches.
Do you have any favorite local traditions or events that you recommend to visitors?
Cologne Carnival is very special, because the Streets and bars get more than full and people drink a lot. Recommend beside the main Season i like to Show the Christmas markets between the end of November to the beginning of January.
How do you tailor your tours to cater to different types of travelers (e.g., families, solo travelers, couples)?
Always asking that before. I am flexible about the speed for the tour. I had families with small children and also seniors, that I could only do the tour very slowely by walking, but much more talking.
What advice would you give to new Lokafyers to help them deliver exceptional experiences?
Do your home work before and also after the tour. Be always friendly and flexible. If there are longer distances also ask before if the guest have the correct public Transport tickets. If the like to see museums from inside, tell them that they have to organize it after the CityWalk.
