Meet Barbara: A New Yorker by Heart
Hi, I’m Barbara! Originally from Italy, I never imagined myself living in New York City. But life had other plans, and when my husband proposed moving here with our six-year-old daughter, I hesitated. I wasn’t sure if New York would be the right place to raise a child, but little did I know, this city would completely win me over. From the vibrant parks and cultural attractions to the warmth of the locals and the endless opportunities to explore, New York quickly became home. Now, as a Lokafyer, I get to share my love for this incredible city with visitors from all over the world, helping them connect with locals and experience New York like a true insider.
A New Beginning in the Big Apple
When my husband proposed moving from Italy to New York City with our six-year-old daughter, I admit I was quite taken aback. I had never been fascinated by New York, and above all, I didn’t think it was a suitable city to raise a child. But instead, I completely fell in love with the city, its people, its parks, schools, theaters, museums, restaurants… beaches…
The warmth and kindness with which they welcomed my daughter at school, even though she didn’t speak a single word of English, the countless activities organized for children, the music in the streets, the free gardens for the elderly in the midst of the city’s chaos, the river, and its ferries completely won me over.
Connecting with Locals Through Lokafy
Lokafy immediately conquered me when I read that they were looking for people to take visitors around the city as if they were friends on vacation! A wonderful concept. While walking, we discover amazing places and sights, and I share what it’s like to live in New York.
At the same time, I provide plenty of useful and practical information, like how to use public transport, how to save money, and where to buy the most original souvenirs…or what to do in case of a medical emergency.
I reach out to “friends” who will be visiting in advance so they can ask for my help in planning their trip. Together, we create an itinerary for the day of our tour tailored specifically to their needs and interests.
Exploring Hidden Gems with a Local
I love taking visiting friends to unique places and planning itineraries that only true New Yorkers know, like the Gramercy area with its stunning hidden garden or visiting Eddy Fish, a shop that competes with originality against the big chains.
I enjoy walking the streets like real New Yorkers and soaking in the city’s electrifying atmosphere. Stopping to eat outdoors at the first Shake Shack in the city, located in Madison Square Park, or at Pete’s Tavern, which was disguised as a florist during the Prohibition era, adorned with fresh flowers. Signs outside invited passersby in, enticing them to purchase orchids, roses, violets, and gardenias from this unique facade.
A City That Always Has Something New to Offer
The most exciting and challenging part is hosting friends who have been to New York many times before. Finding new places to visit with them, like the recently renovated Seaport District, which boasts one of the best views of the Brooklyn Bridge, is a thrill. Because once you return home, New York stays in your heart, and you’ll do everything you can to come back! And I can assure you that every time, we will discover places together that you’ve never visited before. The strength of this wonderful city lies in its thousand different souls and cultures and its constant renewal.
And for the more athletic friends, we can even organize Pickleball games, blending in with real New Yorkers in the free public parks that welcome you with enthusiasm. Or we can play on the Pickleball courts set up every summer within the stunning scenery of Central Park.
The Magic of Experiencing a City Like a Local
New York City is more than just its iconic landmarks. It’s about the experiences, the people, and the connections we make along the way. Through Lokafy, I’ve had the privilege of meeting travelers from all over the world and sharing with them the real essence of this city. Whether it’s discovering hidden gems, tasting delicious food, or simply strolling through the lively streets, every experience becomes more meaningful when shared with locals. So, if you're planning your next visit, don’t just see New York—experience it like a true New Yorker!
