Belgrade, a city rich in history, culture, and vibrant energy, is best experienced through the eyes of a local. Connecting with locals allows travelers to uncover hidden gems, learn about unique traditions, and truly immerse themselves in the spirit of a destination. Lokafy offers a unique way to explore cities through personalized walking tours with locals, ensuring a more authentic and enriching experience. One such passionate Lokafyer is Nela Kovacevic, who brings her love for Belgrade to life through her guided tours. In this blog, we dive into her story, her favorite spots, and what makes her tours so special.

About Nela

Tell us a bit about yourself. What inspired you to become a Lokafyer?

I am Nela Kovacevic, born and raised in Belgrade, with a few years spent living in London and Granada, Spain, where I pursued my PhD studies. By profession, I am a Spanish and English teacher and translator, but in the past decade, I have worked as a personal development coach and energy healer.

As a young girl, I dreamed of being a tourist guide, but life took me on a different path. When I discovered Lokafy, I saw a wonderful opportunity to fulfill that childhood dream. It is an absolute joy to introduce travelers to Belgrade, showcasing its most beautiful and significant places while sharing its rich history, culture, and local customs.

What do you love most about the city you guide in?

Belgrade may not be packed with classical sightseeing attractions, but it has an unmistakable charm. Known for its vibrant atmosphere, it boasts an abundance of restaurants, bars, and clubs, alongside quieter, picturesque corners that transport you to another era. From scenic walking spots to lively markets and cultural events, Belgrade is a city full of life, where locals are warm, friendly, and hospitable.

Your Lokafy Experience

What do you think makes a tour truly exceptional?

Even though I am still new to Lokafy, each tour has been a unique and memorable experience. The most exceptional tours happen when there is a great connection between me and the travelers. When we share positive energy, engage in meaningful conversations, and feel like old friends, the tour becomes more than just sightseeing—it turns into an unforgettable experience.

How do you prepare for your tours to ensure they are unique and engaging for travelers?

I tailor my tours based on the duration, meeting point, and traveler preferences. A standard itinerary includes iconic spots such as:

  • Belgrade Fortress Kalemegdan
  • St. Michael Church
  • Pedestrian Street Knez Mihailova
  • Republic Square
  • Parliament Building
  • St. Mark’s Church
  • Temple of Saint Sava (one of the largest Orthodox temples in the world)

For longer tours, I introduce travelers to Zemun, a picturesque district on the banks of the Danube River. Throughout the tour, I weave in historical insights, interesting facts, and recommendations for the best local cuisine and drinks.

What is your favorite part of being a Lokafyer?

Nela-2

The best part of being a Lokafyer is meeting new people and sharing the beauty of my hometown. I love how each tour starts with travelers as strangers but ends with warm hugs, big smiles, and wonderful memories.

Local Insights

What local hidden gems or off-the-beaten-path spots do you love to share with travelers?

One of my favorite hidden gems is Kosančićev Venac, often referred to as Belgrade's Montmartre. This historic neighborhood transports visitors back in time with its old-world charm, cultural landmarks, and rich stories of writers, artists, and noble Belgrade families.

Can you describe your favorite neighborhood and why you love it?

Kosančićev Venac is my favorite neighborhood because of its preserved historical character. Every street and corner holds a piece of Belgrade’s past, making it a captivating place to explore. Unlike mainstream tourist spots, it offers a truly local experience.

Tips and Advice

What advice would you give to new Lokafyers to help them deliver exceptional experiences?

New Lokafyers should always provide travelers with a historical and cultural background of Belgrade to enhance their understanding of the city. Including anecdotes, legends, and interesting stories helps travelers retain information more easily. Additionally, while having an itinerary is important, flexibility is key—being open to traveler preferences makes the experience even more enjoyable.

Do you have any tips for visitors on how to make the most of their trip?

Visitors should plan for a 3 to 4-hour walking tour to fully appreciate Belgrade’s highlights. Unlike cities with numerous grand landmarks like London or Paris, Belgrade offers a unique charm best enjoyed by embracing its vibrant atmosphere. The best time to visit is between April to June and September to December when the weather is pleasant.

Closing Thoughts

Belgrade is a city best discovered through its people, and what better way to explore than with a local like Nela? Her tours not only introduce travelers to Belgrade’s famous landmarks but also its hidden gems and authentic spirit. If you're looking to connect with locals and experience Belgrade in a truly unique way, a walking tour with a Lokafyer is the perfect way to do it!
